We lift the lid on hair masks, how and when to use them

Coming into the cooler months, it's even more important to look after your locks considering all the weather torture they go through! We take a peek behind hair masks and tell you how and when to use them this winter.

Despite hair masks being around for many moons, a lot of people are still nervous about using them on a regular basis, and don't really know whether they're beneficial. The truth is, if you haven't unlocked the magic of hair masks yet, drop everything and try them today! Masks are a fantastic way to give your hair a boost of hydration and resilience throughout the year, and in our expert opinion they are an essential part of hair care, used as part of your regular hair routine.

How often?

Even if you think your hair is looking fly, a weekly hair mask is a great way to maintain your locks at their optimum. Even the healthiest hair struggles to deal with changes in seasons or being pulled into a range of styles, and a mask used once a week will help it cope with the change.

How to apply?

Technically, a hair mask should be applied to washed and towel-dried hair. Massage the product in from the roots to the tips (concentrate especially on the ends), and then comb through your hair with your fingers. Wrap a hot towel over your hair as you wait for 10-20 minutes before washing out for maximum effect! We understand that the process described above is not ideal for the time poor (and who is really keen to dirty a towel by putting over a wet hair mask?), but never fear – you can actually apply masks to dry hair too and still reap the benefits. Apply to your dry hair at least 20 minutes before you plan to wash it, and leave it in for extra time if you are able. You can even leave the mask in overnight if your hair is looking drier than the desert, just make sure you wrap your hair first or be prepared to sacrifice your pillow case.

What mask to use?

Getting a mask that's perfect for your hair is important. If your locks are prone to greasiness, you want to make sure that you're not choosing a heavy formula that's going to weigh your hair down. L'Oréal Professionnel has a great range of masks suited to a multitude of hair types. The is perfect for colour damaged hair, and the is a great way to deeply repair and nourish weak or dull tresses.
