Insta Inspo: Gym Braids

Braids are our new favourite 'do to get you through a sweat session! Get inspired by these sporty Instagrammers.

Whether you're amped up for the gym (or dragging yourself there reluctantly!) looking the part goes a long way in mentally preparing yourself for a big workout. Braided hairstyles are brilliant for your pre-exercise preparations because they make you look and feel like a tribal warrior. Take inspiration from these four Instagrammable sports braid interpretations.

The Rope Braid

The classic single rope braid is a failsafe sporty hairstyle – and the perfect entry level style for plaiting novices. Simply secure your hair into a mid-height pony and then create a tight and thick plait through the tail. It's better for your braid to be on the tighter side as it will inevitably loosen as you bounce through your workout.

The Double Braid

What's better than one French braid? Two French braids, of course! These structured plaits are a go-to hairstyle for boxers and mixed martial art fighters because they're clean, tight and unlikely to fall apart mid-round. If you're after that perfectly symmetrical double French braided look then you'll probably need to enlist the help of a skilled friend to do them for you.

The Wraparound Braid

For pilates class or other low-impact exercise, the wraparound braid is a pretty way to keep your hair out of your eyes and off your brow. To help the braid stay put, start with a spritz of L at the roots. Then, begin the braid on one side and work it around so it finishes on the opposite side. Secure the braid at the back of the head and then gather the remaining lengths into a low textured ponytail.

The Viking Braid

This Viking warrior-inspired style oozes ferocity and toughness, which is precisely the mindset you want before tackling a hefty weights session! The look consists of three plaits which meld into one at the nape of the neck – and it's easier to recreate than it looks because the braids needn't be identical. So long as all three braids gather into one, it will have the desired dramatic impact. Go get 'em tiger!
