What is a hair mask?
Shampoo and conditioner might be two regular elements of your haircare routine, but not everyone thinks to use a hair mask...
A hair mask is a deep and nourishing conditioning treatment that is applied after shampooing and rinsing the hair. There are different hair masks on the market and, depending on their formula, they work in different ways. Some work from inside the cuticle to repair damaged hair, while others provide a protective sheathe over the top of the hair to seal in moisture, and some do both! This is why it's important to choose the right mask for your hair.
How to use a hair mask
Because a hair mask offers a deeper condition that a regular conditioner, most of them should be left on for longer, usually between 3-10 minutes (always check the packaging, some can even be left on overnight!) depending on the formula and the level of care that your hair needs.
After shampooing and gently squeezing out excess moisture from the hair, take a 2-3 inch section and work the mask into the hair, focusing on the lengths and ends. Repeat until all the hair is covered, then leave for the recommended time and rinse thoroughly. Include a hair mask in your haircare routine once a week (more if particularly damaged) to keep it in prime condition.
Choosing the best hair mask for...
A hair mask for coloured hair helps seal in the colour, meaning it lasts for longer and keeps its shine. For highlighted hair, we love the from Serie Expert. This nourishing Gel-Masque targets weakened and damaged areas of coloured hair and wraps it into a lightweight film to protect against every day wear and tear. Colour-treated hair is intensely nourished and protected in just 60 seconds.
Most hair masks are ideal for dry hair with their deep conditioning qualities! While no haircare treatment can truly repair split ends (only your stylist can snip those away), a mask for dry hair smooths the cuticles and infuses the fibre with moisture to prevent more from developing.
Try the Anti-Breakage Inforcer mask from Serie Expert if you do suffer from split ends, breakages and brittle hair (great for detangling stubborn knots too) or, for an all-over dose of nourishment, the silicone-free Nutrifier mask from the same range.
A major worry for those who suffer from weak or thinning hair is that a hair mask will leave their hair looking limp and greasy. Once again, it's all about choosing the right formula. Instead of an oil-based mask, try a gel treatment for volume and structure. We recommend the in-salon Volumetry Gel-masque, which uses the active ingredient Hydralight to penetrate the fiber, infuse hydration and give hair an instant boost of natural-looking volume.
If you're unsure about what kind of hair mask you need, don't hesitate to ask your stylist for a hair diagnosis to discover the best course of action for healthy-looking, voluminous and glossy hair.
