Get your hairspray ready! Faux Perms are here and ready to make waves (or curls) around the country. But should you get one?...
The Australian autumn often plays havoc with our hair resulting in curls and kinks no straightener can tame. Faux perms are a great way to embrace this extra texture in a big way... but they won't suit everyone. Being able to shape your perm depending on your face, hair length and texture will be key to deciding what sort of perm you should get.
The 2017 version of the perm has a lot more movement in the hair than the tight, overprocessed curls of the '80s and '90s, and this spectrum of style is how you can find a perm that suits you. Keep in mind that hair loses a lot of length when curled, so it might not work for medium or short hair lengths. Square face shapes can often be softened by longer bouncy curls, while narrow face shapes can sometimes get lost if your locks get too lion-like!
How to achieve this look:
So how do you go crazy for curls? If you don't naturally have curly locks, then an easy and long-lasting way to achieve these curls is to book in for an appointment with your hair stylist. They will be able to choose the best style for your face shape.
If you're keen to do it yourself, try a triple barrel tong to give more of an 80s curl, use a volumizing product like before blow drying, and set the curls with . If you're keen for a looser look perm, experiment with a single barrel curling wand (the bigger the barrel the looser the curls) and curl your hair tightly using 1 inch sections. Use your fingers to loosen and brush out the curls, and set them with a hairspray.
Finally, if your hair is naturally curly then all you need to do is use some styling products to define what you already have. Try a curl enhancing styling product on towel dried hair like . Once the hair is dried, follow it up with .
Embrace the imperfect.
Our top tip for faux perms in 2017 is to embrace the imperfect when it comes to creating your curls. This also prevents you from looking like Shirley Temple. We're loving loose textured curls that lightly frame the face.
