Black beauty - how dark brunettes can still have fun with hair colour

Calling all black haired beauties! As a babe with super dark locks, we know it can sometimes feel like it's hard to get as creative with colour as your fair haired friends. Here are a few ways you can dip your toe into the dyed hair world, while picking colours that will complement your natural features.

The key to styling any locks with colour is considering your skin tone. Before you decide what colour your hair should be, work out your skin colour type and whether it's dark or light, cool or warm. Hint: Cool skin has a blue undertone, and warm skin has a yellow undertone.

Once you have this all figured out, it's time to colour your hair world!

Here are some highlighting ideas for our black beauties:

For a more natural look, we can't go past brown balayage in super dark locks. Ask your stylist to opt for colours that complement your skin colour, more ash browns for cool skin, and caramel/chocolates for warm skin. The idea is to pick a colour (or range of colours) which make your hair look like it's naturally been bleached by the sun. The balayage technique will help integrate the highlights throughout your hair for a subtle yet sophisticated look.

If high contrast is more your style, why not try? Set against your black tresses these pops of blonde will give you a street chic style that will turn heads wherever you go.

Vivid colours can also work well in darker locks! We love burgundy and navy highlights set against gorgeous dark hair, or if hot and spicy is what you're after bright red is also a great option. Again, we would recommend looking for a stylist that specialises in balayage when it comes to incorporating bright highlights into black hair, as it's less chunky than traditional dye techniques. This technique also needs less maintenance, which is a great gift when using colours that are far different from your natural black locks.

If you're still unsure what colour to try, ask your stylist! They'll be fantastic at giving you vibrant shades that will match your skin tone. With red specifically, if you have fair skin a bright orange-red or auburn will look suit you beautifully, whereas medium skin tones look best with copper and golden reds and a dark skin tones are a match made in heaven with blue-red cooler hues.
