Boo-boos, oopsies or just plain bad habits. There are a number of hair mistakes many of us make on a daily basis, often without even realising it. Here are five common hair errors - and why you should cut them out ASAP!
1. Washing Too Often
It's been drilled into your head that things like cleansing your skin and brushing your teeth must be done on a daily basis. However, this rule does not apply to your hair washing routine! Over washing your locks strips away it's natural oils and can even disrupts the oil production cycle. If you need a between-wash refresh, reach for a trusty dry shampoo instead.
2. Vigorous Towel Drying
Do you intensely attack your just-washed locks with a towel? Well, that's a no-no! That vigorous rubbing motion ruffles the cuticles, which leaves them more prone to dullness, frizz and breakage. Instead, change up your drying action by blotting the hair with a towel and then shaking out the strands with your fingers. Yes, it will take longer, but it's worth it for the sake of your hair health.
3. Overuse Of Hair Elastics
Speaking of breakage, you may want to take a break from hairstyles that involve hair elastics. Ponytails and buns are oh-so-practical for everyday wear, but the bottom line is overuse of elastics can be detrimental and be the cause of hair breakage. Make a conscious effort to regularly switch out tight hair elastics by either wearing your hair loose or trying alternatives like soft hair ties or clips.
4. Cranking Up The Heat Tools
Whether it's a blow dryer, straightener or curling iron, there's a complete misconception that having the heat turned up full blast will speed up the styling process or make your style last longer. In the short term, blasting your heat styling tools is likely to result in frizz. In the long term, you could be causing serious damage, which can in turn lead to dehydration and breakage. The solution is simple - turn the temperature setting all the way down!
5. Incorrect Product Use While Heat Styling
Speaking of heat styling – the products you do and don't use while heat styling can be just as detrimental as styling on the wrong temperature setting. To begin with, using a heat protection product such as is a must. Otherwise, you're basically sending your hair into battle without any armour to protect itself! Meanwhile, avoid using any hairspray until after you've heat styled your locks. When alcohol in hairspray comes into contact with heat, you'll hear a sizzling sound, which is literally your hair frying! By all means set your hairstyle with hairspray – just do it after you've finished heat styling.
