4 ways to refresh your mum bun - tricks for taming post-partum hair

Mother's Day is just around the corner, and mums around the world are getting themselves primped and preened for the big day! Jokes, mums don't have any time for themselves. Here are 4 easy ways to dress up every mums' go-to 'do – the mum bun.

For those out of the maternal loop, the mum bun is the hairstyle which many mums default to when they are time poor and energy depleted, which is most of the time. It covers all manners of unwashed, uncared for crazy locks, but mainly it just gets mums' tresses away from all those tiny sticky baby hands that love to pull hair.

Bun Basics

We're not going to suggest getting rid of the messy bun altogether, that would be plain crazy. A little bit of refinement however can work wonders in making you look and feel more polished, especially if you're not feeling at your jazziest. Try a spritz of across your hair when pulling it into a bun. Smooth stray hairs back with your fingers, or run a fine toothed comb lightly back towards your bun to pull everything together. This will help tame those pesky baby hair halos that spring up after having a baby (whoever named them that has a cruel sense of humour) and even make unwashed hair seem sleek and sophisticated – winner!

Let's twist again

Another trick to taming those unruly flyaways is to incorporate a twist or two across the crown of your head when pulling your hair away from your face. Work your hair into a side or centre part and roll the hair gently away from your hairline. Pin in place before securing the rest of your hair in a bun or ponytail. If your mane is feeling a bit flat for this style, try integrating through the roots and lengths before twisting. The invisible dry shampoo from L'Oréal Professionnel is ultra absorbent, leaves no residue, and provides volume and grip to your hair with the added bonus of a delicious long-lasting perfume. Set in place further with if need be.

Braid it baby!

Similar to the twist, the braid is another great way to add interest to your hair without needing a lot of time or effort. Braid along your hairline leading to your bun, or even up the back of your head as shown here. Unwashed hair provides cleaner braids, which is always a winner for mums!

Add an accessory

If all else fails, add an accessory. You'd be surprised how much better a dishevelled bun can look when a discreet bow, head scarf or headband is added (but probably not all three at once). Australia's about to go into winter too – go wild with hats and beanies! Accessories are totally having a moment right now, and it's a great time to experiment with adding them to your messy mum bun, giving the impression that you made an effort instead of running out the door with your clothes on inside out.

So there you have it – mums get excited about rejuvenating your style! If you're not a mother, why not try treating your own mama to a bit of hair TLC with a luxurious treatment or mask? We love the , which nourishes and improves hair fibres for up to 4 washes.
